HC Deb 05 April 1960 vol 621 cc34-5W
65. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs if he is aware that, under the provisions of the Housing Act, 1957, the owner-occupier of a house included in a clearance order is obliged to pay for the demolition of his house out of the compensation which he receives and, that in most cases, the site is of little value because it is so small; and if he will take steps to relieve such tenants of this charge.

Mr. H. Brooke

Owners of houses subject to clearance and demolition orders have always been responsible for the cost of demolition. I do not think this unreasonable, seeing that the land remains in their possession; but if the hon. Member has any particular case in mind, I will look into it.
