HC Deb 13 May 1959 vol 605 c148W
75. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for War if he is aware that the military prison in the West of England in which the recent trouble took place is four centuries old and was condemned 40 years ago, and that it has an adverse effect upon those running the prison as well as on the prisoners; and if he will take steps to demolish this building and construct one more in accordance with modern ideas of prison reform.

76. Mr. Hunter

asked the Secretary of State for War what were the improvements made to Shepton Mallet Military Prison to bring it into line with modern standards; and when these improvements were carried out.

Mr. Soames

I would refer the hon. Members to my Answers about Shepton Mallet on 6th May.
