58. Mr. Ross

asked the Minister of Labour the number of jobs, lost in Scotland in 1958 and the first quarter of 1959 as result of closure of, and redundancies in, Ministry of Supply, and Ministry of Works factories, and in defence establishments in Scotland.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The net reduction in employment in Scotland by the Ministry of Supply and the Service Departments was about 4,000. The Ministry of Works has no factories in Scotland.

asked the Minister of Labour the rise in civil employment in Scotland between September, 1957, and April, 1959.

Precise statistics of the numbers in civil employment relate only to May each year and are published the following February. Between May, 1957 and May, 1958, there was a reduction of 42,000.
