asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food the number of farmstock involved in outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in 1958, the compensation paid on slaughter, and the origin of the infection, where this has been traced.

The numbers of animals slaughtered in outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in 1958 were: 9,529 cattle, 2,442 sheep, 8,008 pigs, 24 goats. The compensation paid was £869,562. Infection is thought to have spread from the Continent in 17 primary outbreaks and from imported meat in 10.
