HC Deb 15 December 1959 vol 615 cc122-3W
Mr. Woodburn

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that the death rate from lung cancer is still increasing rapidly; and whether, in view of the failure of the campaign to affect smokers, he will initiate an international investigation to seek an effective means of prevention and cure of this disease.

Mr. T. G. D. Galbraith

My right hon. Friend is aware of the continuing increase in the number of deaths from lung cancer in Scotland. Local health authorities have been helping for some time to make generally known the possible consequences of smoking, and he believes that this has been largely achieved. So far as international investigation is concerned, I cannot add to the reply by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health to the same Question yesterday.
