HC Deb 29 April 1959 vol 604 c131W
86. Mr. P. Williams

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is satisfied that there are sufficient alternative means of employment in the Sunderland district for those who normally work in the shipyards; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. lain Macleod

No. I regret to say that there are comparatively few vacancies notified to my local offices in the area and suitable for unemployed shipyard workers. My hon. Friend the Minister of State, Board of Trade, informed the House on 10th April of the efforts the Government were making to help the area to obtain new industry.
