HC Deb 03 April 1958 vol 585 cc186-8W
60. Mr. Mason

asked the Prime Minister whether the Anglo-American Declassification Committee is still empowered to delay announcements of the progress of Zero Energy Thermonuclear Assembly, Mark I, and the developments of Zero Energy Thermonuclear Assembly, Mark II; to what extent the Government have considered reviewing the restrictions in this field; and whether he is satisfied they are not causing undue embarrassment to the scientists and engineers employed on these projects.

The Prime Minister

There are no restrictions on the announcement of the results of current experimental work in the field of controlled thermonuclear reactions; the answer to the last part of the Question is, therefore, in the affirmative. As regards the future, declassification arrangements will continue to be reviewed by the Declassification Committee.

Mr. Mason

asked the Prime Minister what progress is being made in the redesigning of Zero Energy Thermonuclear Assembly; how long it will take to complete present developments of structural alteration before further experiments can take place; and whether he is satisfied that progress is not being hampered by lack of sufficient finance.

The Prime Minister

I am informed by the Atomic Energy Authority that the Zero Energy Thermonuclear Assembly is being closed down for modification immediately after Easter, and is expected to restart in June. More substantial modifications are expected to be made at the beginning of next year. Progress is not being hampered by lack of money.

Mr. Mason

asked the Prime Minister what steps are being taken to assure the Atomic Energy Authority that the added number of scientists, technicians and engineers required for the development of Zero Energy Thermonuclear Assembly, Mark II, will be available.

The Prime Minister

I am informed by the Atomic Energy Authority that it is taking steps, both by recruiting and by redeployment of staff, to ensure that the development of Zero Energy Thermonuclear Assembly, Mark II, will proceed as planned; and that it is satisfied with the progress made.
