HC Deb 11 February 1957 vol 564 c133W
Mr. P. Noel-Baker

asked the Paymaster-General how many miners are now engaged in the National Coal Board's pits on development work, and how many on getting coal.

Mr. Maudling

Out of a total labour force of 697,400 in 1956 the equivalent of some 20,000 underground workers were fully engaged on development work, in addition to 18,400 surface and underground workers fully engaged on other capital and special work.
