§ 36. Mr. Malcolm MacMillanasked the Secretary of State for Scotland when major reconstruction work on the Tarbert—Rodel road in the Isle of Harris under the Crofter Counties Programme was discontinued and why; and when it is intended to complete the rest of this road on a major reconstruction standard.
§ Mr. MaclayA scheme under the Crofter Counties Programme covering 27W five miles of this road was authorised in 1950. Since this was completed a scheme for another three-quarters of a mile has been authorised and work is now in progress on it.
I understand that Inverness County Council is reviewing the priority of Crofter County schemes within the county, and when I receive its recommendations, and also the recommendations of the Highlands Advisory Panel on the road programme in the Highlands generally, I will consider when further work can be authorised on this road.
§ 37. Mr. Malcolm MacMillanasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that the people of Quidinish, Isle of Harris, have been denied a village road for nearly 100 years; whether he has yet agreed to the request for a grant towards its cost from Inverness County Council; and what are the reasons for his decision.
§ Mr. MaclayI am aware of the need for a road to serve this township and I hope to be able to make an offer of grant to the county council for this road very shortly.
