HC Deb 02 August 1957 vol 574 cc274-5W
Sir A. Bossom

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will require the British Broadcasting Corporation to announce outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease during the market report at 6.30 a.m. and the news at 7 a.m., mentioning any markets that are closed in consequence, so that farmers in nearby areas may be saved from the risk involved in moving stock from their farms in affected areas.

Mr. Amory

There is the closest cooperation between the B.B.C. and my Department for broadcasting announcements of outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease and the arrangements satisfied the Departmental Committee on Foot and Mouth Disease which reported in 1954. It would be impracticable to include in the broadcast announcement details of the markets that are closed, but farmers are able to obtain this information locally without difficulty.
