HC Deb 02 August 1957 vol 574 cc273-4W
Captain Kerby

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is aware that the chairmen of the disciplinary committees of agricultural marketing boards are required, by law, to be independent, but that they are, in fact, paid by the board who are the prosecutors at meetings of these committees; and what action he is taking in the matter.

Mr. Amory

The chairmen of the disciplinary committees of agricultural marketing boards are independent persons, as required by the Agricultural Marketing Act, 1949, with legal qualifications and approved by the Minister. I would not agree that their independence is affected by the fact that their fees are paid by the board.
