§ 53. Mr. Youngerasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will now consider paying compensation 43W to former British officials employed by the Egyptian Government, pending the recovery of this compensation from the Egyptian Government in pursuance of the procedure laid down in the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty, 1954.
§ Mr. Ormsby-GoreNo. It is clear from the terms of an Exchange of Notes annexed to the Anglo-Egyptian Agreement of October, 1954, that the Egyptian Government have accepted an obligation to assess the reparation due in respect of the claims of ex-officials. Her Majesty's Government have every sympathy for the claimants and will continue to do all they can to ensure that the Egyptian Government discharge their obligations towards them. But they cannot agree that their interest in this matter should extend to accepting financial responsibility for the obligations of a foreign Government.
