HC Deb 12 December 1956 vol 562 c42W
50. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if Her Majesty's Government either directly or through the United Nations in the interest of pacification will offer financial and practical assistance both in respect of the clearing of the Suez Canal of obstruction and of rebuilding the devastated area of Port Said; and whether he will ascertain from the United Nations in what manner persons and organisations in this and other countries can give voluntary assistance to meet human need among Egyptian people affected by recent military operations.

Commander Noble

Her Majesty's Government and the French Government have already cleared a channel through the section of the Suez Canal under their control, and have offered the United Nations all the very considerable resources at their disposal for clearing the rest of the Canal.

They have also made substantial practical contributions towards the rehabilitation of such damage as was done in Port Said, particularly in the field of public utilities.

Persons and organisations in this country who wish to give voluntary assistance in Egypt can best do so by getting in touch with the International Red Cross and other similar organisations who specialise in such work.
