asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer "whether, in view of the mounting evidence of the close association between cigarette smoking and cancer of the lung, he will consider the desirability of discouraging this practice by increasing the tax on cigarettes and cigarette tobacco and reducing that on pipe tobacco, cigars and cheroots.

As this is a tax matter, I cannot anticipate my right hon. Friend's Budget statement. But I can assure the hon. Member that the Government are keeping all aspects of this question under consideration.
