HC Deb 02 August 1956 vol 557 c205W
Wing Commander Bullus

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what representations he has made to the Burmese Government that the regulations governing remittances from Burma are harming British commercial interests in that country and, in many cases, causing hardship to individual British subjects.

Mr. Dodds-Parker

Her Majesty's Ambassador at Rangoon has taken up this matter on frequent occasions with the Burmese Government. He has pointed out not only that their rules governing remittances, and more particularly the manner in which these rules are applied, are inequitable in their effects, but also that they stultify the Burmese Government's expressed wish to encourage foreign investment in Burma. I understand that the Burmese Government are examining their remittance procedure in the light of these representations, but I regret that there has, so far, been little improvement in this unsatisfactory position.
