HC Deb 24 November 1955 vol 546 cc137-8W
85. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Education if he is aware of the shortage of science teachers; and what steps he is taking to make their position more attractive in order to recruit more men into this profession.

Mr. Vosper

Yes. My right hon. Friend hopes some improvement will result from the increased salary allowances now available for teachers of advanced work, from the decision announced last July to allow the deferment from National Service of certain graduates in science and mathematics who take up teaching, and from the growing recognition of the importance of this work. But the only long term remedy lies in a large increase in the output of scientists generally, and it is the policy of Her Majesty's Government to secure such an increase from schools, technical colleges and the universities.
