HC Deb 25 November 1953 vol 521 c35W
57. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Minister of Food Her Majesty's Government's policy regarding the future building of slaughterhossuses.

Major Lloyd George

An Interdepartmental Committee has been appointed to recommend where slaughterhouses should be sited under the policy of moderate concentration which I announced in the House on 5th November, 1952. Local authorities and private interests will be encouraged to build new slaughterhouses at such places as may be agreed.

59. Mr. P. Wells

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware of the difficulties under which animals are slaughtered and inspected at the Sittingbourne slaughterhouse; and what his intentions are to bring about some improvement.

Major Lloyd George

The daily kill is limited to an amount which, in agreement with the local authority, can reasonably be handled and inspected. I am afraid the site does not lend itself to improvement or enlargement of the premises.
