HC Deb 25 November 1953 vol 521 cc34-5W
53. Sir I. Fraser

asked the Minister of Food the saving to his Department in money and manpower through the decontrol of feeding-stuffs and cereals.

Major Lloyd George

Allowing for new staff requirements in connection with the present arrangements for carrying out the guarantees under the Agriculture Act, the decontrol of feedingstuffs and cereals has resulted in a net saving of some 300 in staff and £142,000 in salaries. A substantial staff will be required next year to operate the deficiency payment scheme, but I am unable at this date to make any firm estimate.

54. Sir I. Fraser

asked the Minister of Food the saving to his Department in money and manpower through the discontinuing of sugar rationing.

Major Lloyd George

There will be a staff saving of about 500 and a salary saving of about £200,000 as a result of the derationing of sugar.
