HC Deb 12 November 1953 vol 520 c90W
142. Mr. George Craddock

asked the Minister of Education why her Department failed to notify a student who had won a State scholarship and to give the necessary financial particulars until after the hon. Member for Bradford, South telephoned her Department, one week before the admission of the student to London University; and if she will state the period within which this information is normally sent out.

Miss Horsbrugh

The student in question was told on 25th August, 1953, that she had been nominated for a State scholarship. The value to her award could not be confirmed until an assurance was received that she had been accepted by University College, London. The form sent to her for this purpose was not returned to my Department by the College until the end of September. Students are normally notified of the amount of their award within a few days of the receipt by my Department of all the relevant information, which must include confirmation by the University of their acceptance.
