HC Deb 12 November 1953 vol 520 c69W
94. Mr. Bishop

asked the Minister of Agriculture the estimated value, in the latest convenient period, of kitchen waste recovered by the local authorities; and what was the estimated cost of its recovery.

Sir T. Dugdale

The value, after processing, of kitchen waste recovered by local authorities in the year ended 31st March, 1953, was about£1.6 million. The costs of individual local authorities vary considerably, but during the last 10 months of the year in question the price of raw kitchen waste was controlled at a figure of£3 10s. a ton, based on the estimated average cost of collection.

95. Mr. Bishop

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the reduced demand for kitchen waste and the heavy cost of its collection, he will now consider withdrawing the direction by which local authorities are required to maintain these collections.

Sir T. Dugdale

I intend to make a statement shortly on this subject.
