HC Deb 12 November 1953 vol 520 cc69-70W
Mr. Viant

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many dogs coming into Great Britain have gone to quarantine stations during the last 25 years; and how many of these have left the quarantine stations in a healthy condition after six months' quarantine.

Sir T. Dugdale

During the last 25 years, 27,594 dogs have been put into quarantine on arrival in this country. There are no records of the state of their health when leaving, but it is known that 19 died of rabies while in quarantine.

Statistics of deaths in quarantine from other causes are available only for the last five years. Of the 9,189 dogs quarantined during this period, 396 died in quarantine (including five deaths from rabies).
