HC Deb 12 November 1953 vol 520 cc76-7W
107. Brigadier Medlicott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if his attention has been drawn to the 1951 report of the Inspectors of Constabulary and, in particular, to the number of extraneous duties which fall upon the police; and if he will consider advising a rearrangement of such duties, so that the activities of the police can be mainly concentrated upon the prevention and detection of crime and the control of road traffic.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

I am sending to my hon. and gallant Friend a copy of the report of the Committee on Police Extraneous Duties which was submitted to me earlier this year, together with a copy of a circular letter which I recently issued to police authorities in England and Wales asking them to review, in the light of the Committee's observations, the scope of the extraneous duties at present placed upon the members of the force.
