HC Deb 12 November 1953 vol 520 c77W
Brigadier Medlicott

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, in view of the part which police take in the control of road traffic and the need for more frequent checking of brakes, steering and roadworthiness of vehicles generally, what special efforts are being made to bring the police force up to full strength.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

I am most anxious that police establishments should be brought up to full strength in order to enable the police to carry out efficiently their various responsibilities, including their responsibilities for the control of traffic. During the last two years, considerable improvements have been made in police conditions of service and the building of police houses has been pressed forward. In recent months, advertising for the Metropolitan Police Force and for certain other forces has been carried out on a wider scale than hitherto, and new negotiating machinery for the police has been brought into being.
