HC Deb 07 May 1953 vol 515 c41W
58. Mr. G. Williams

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what conditions are laid down as to the age of retirement for male and female civil servants.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

With a few exceptions the minimum age of retirement for established civil servants is 60, both for men and for women. It is the Government's policy that staff should be retained beyond the minimum retiring age for as long as practicable consistently with the needs of the work and the fitness and efficiency of the individual. Each individual case is considered on its own merits and there is no differentiation in the treatment of men and women civil servants in this respect.
