§ 116. Mr. T. W. Jonesasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he is aware that the Barmouth Urban District Council has been crippled financially as the result of carrying out sea defence works at a cost of f180,000; that a further scheme, to cost f26,000, cannot be undertaken, due to heavy commitments; and if he will consider amending the Coast Protection Act, 1949, so that the work of construction and maintenance will be accepted as a national charge.
§ Mr. H. MacmillanI am aware that the expenditure on sea defence by Barmouth Urban District Council entails a heavy burden on their rates. They are however receiving contributions both from the Merioneth County Council and the Exchequer in aid of the major scheme. I am ready to consider the further scheme for grant under the Coast Protection Act, 1949. I cannot however undertake to introduce legislation on the lines suggested.
