§ 57. Mr. Swinglerasked the Minister of Education the number of secondary schoolchildren in the excepted district of Newcastle-under-Lyme in January, 1953;the number and proportion following a grammar school course; and the numbers and proportions of those following agrammar school course who were resident in Newcastle-under-Lyme and in adjoining areas, respectively.
§ Miss HorsbrughI understand that in January, 1953, there were 4,732 senior children on the registers of maintained schools in Newcastle-under-Lyme, of whom 2,057 were in grammar schools. I can best answer the last part of the Question by saying that there were last January 972 children aged 13 residing in Newcastle-under-Lyme of whom 287 or 29.5 per cent. were attending grammar schools either in Newcastle-under-Lyme or elsewhere.
