HC Deb 17 December 1953 vol 522 cc81-2W
54. Mr. MacColl

asked the Minister of Education the total cost in England and Wales, in the last convenient year, of teachers' salaries; and what proportion was paid by the local education authorities.

73. Sir H. Williams

asked the Minister of Education to state for the latest year for which the statistics are available the total paid to teachers by way of salary by the whole of the local education authorities in England and Wales; and what percentage of this total was rate-borne.

Miss Horsbrugh

On the basis of the revised estimates of local education authorities for the financial year 1953–54, the total estimated cost of teachers' salaries in schools and other institutions maintained by those authorities is about £155 million. This expenditure ranks for grant under the main grant formula under the operation of which about 40 per cent. falls as a charge upon the rates.
