HC Deb 21 October 1952 vol 505 c85W
81. Mr. Swingler

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works as representing the Lord President of the Council, whether his attention has been drawn to the results of research by the Medical Research Council into the incidence of lung cancer among gas workers; in what areas this work has been carried out; and whether he will arrange for such research in all areas of the gas industry.

Mr. Molson

The Medical Research Council is aware of the results of an investigation into the incidence of lung cancer among gas workers which was made through a statistical survey of the causes of death of the male pensioners of one of the largest of the former London gas companies. I have no reason to suppose that the conditions of work are different in other areas.

The possibility of making further inquiry on different lines into this problem with a view to discovering any special causes of lung cancer in gas workers is being examined.
