asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will now alter the present coinage system to allow for 10 pennies to a shilling and so take a preliminary step towards a decimal system.

Mr. R. A. Butler:

No, the replacement of the existing bronze coinage by new coins of different value would involve an impossible burden on our present resources of material and labour. The alternative of increasing by 20 per cent. the value of the bronze coinage now in circulation is likewise unsatisfactory.
