§ 35. Mr. Turnerasked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will ensure that a greater volume of naphthalene is made available for the manufacture of phthalic anhydride, as the recent 50 per cent. cut 221W in the supply of this raw material will imply a corresponding cut in the manufacture of synthetic surface coatings for Government contracts, and for such exportable products as motor cars, farm tractors and a wide range of other articles requiring protective coatings.
§ Mr. P. Noel-BakerThe production of naphthalene has been fully maintained, but the demand has greatly increased; as a result, supplies of phthalic anhydride have been reduced by an average of about 25 per cent. New naphthalene plant is being installed; in the meantime, exports are being cut in order that more may be available for making phthalic anhydride and other things.
