HC Deb 15 March 1951 vol 485 c201W
104. Mr. Collick

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of persons convicted for being in charge of motor vehicles whilst under the influence of alcoholic liquor for each year since 1945; what was the number of drivers who had their licence suspended following such conviction; and in how many cases were such licences restored before the full period of suspension had operated.

Mr. Ede

The numbers of charges of driving under the influence of drink or drugs for which convictions were recorded in each of the years 1946–1949, and the numbers of these cases in which the driving licence was suspended, are as follows:

1946 1947 1948 1949
Number of charges for which convictions were recorded 1,635 1,656 1,423 1,662
Number of cases in which the driving licence was suspended 1,266 1,549 1,302 1,566

Figures for these offences were not compiled in 1945, and the figures for 1950 are not yet available. I regret that information about the numbers of licences restored before the full period of suspension had expired is not available.
