87. Mr. Hamilton

asked the Minister of Labour if he will make a further statement on the recruitment of Irish labour for the coal mining industry.

Mr. Lee

It has not been found possible to find any considerable number of men from Ireland suitable and willing to work in the coal mines.

88. Mr. Hamilton

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will make a further statement on the recruitment of Italian labour for the coal mines.

90. Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

asked the Minister of Labour how many Italian workers have been recruited by him for service in the mines in this country; how many are already in this country; and how many are already at work.

Eight hundred and sixty have been accepted. Parties totalling 80 have so far arrived and are at present undergoing a preliminary course o' instruction in English.
