HC Deb 04 June 1951 vol 488 cc60-1W
55. Mr. Osborne

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what assistance he is providing for the skipper of the Grimsby trawler "Churchill," who has been arrested by the Norwegian authorities on a charge of fishing in territorial waters, the boundaries of which are in dispute between Britain and Norway.

Mr. Younger

His Majesty's Ambassador at Oslo reports that the "Churchill" was arrested at Tromso, Norway, on 29th May, after evading arrest the previous day, on a charge of illegal fishing. After her arrest, the "Churchill" escaped from Tromso harbour, but was subsequently caught by Norwegian coastal vessels, and on 31st May was escorted to Vardo where the trial took place on 1st and 2nd June. The "Churchill" was ordered to pay £3,040 which included a sum in lieu of forfeiture of catch. This sum has been guaranteed by the insurance company and the "Churchill" is now on her way home.

Although no detailed report is available, I understand that the British Vice-Consul at Tromso has been in touch with the Norwegian authorities about this case. The hon. Member can be sure that he will have rendered all normal reasonable assistance.
