Major Lloyd

asked the Minister of Local Government and Planning the present estimated cost of completing the new towns compared with the original estimate.

Mr. Lindgren

An estimate was included in the foreword to the accounts under the New Towns Act for 1949–50, and it is hoped to give a revised estimate with the accounts for 1950–51 which will be published in due course.

Major Lloyd

asked the Minister of Local Government and Planning what was the total in 1950 of the administrative staff concerned with housing development in all the new towns and the total of their salaries; and what was the total value of the houses constructed in that year.

Mr. Lindgren

The number and cost of corporations staffs and the expenditure on houses are shown in the annual reports of the corporations. The reports for the year ended 31st March, 1951, will be laid before the House in due course.

asked the Minister of Local Government and Planning what was the total labour force engaged in building houses in all the new towns during 1950; and how many houses were completed in that year.

Mr. Lindgren

The average number of men engaged in building houses in all the new towns in England and Wales during 1950 was 1,294. The number of houses completed in that year was 522.
