HC Deb 04 December 1950 vol 482 c8W
74. Mr. Deedes

asked the Minister of Transport if he will make a statement on the main factors which now determine priorities in carrying out or completing road works and highway development in this country, in view of the curtailment of the normal capital programme.

Mr. Barnes

My principal object is to ensure that out of the limited resources available the best possible provision is made for road maintenance. Expenditure on works of improvement or new construction is therefore being kept to a minimum. Apart from the completion of work in progress before the curtailment of the programme, such works are being confined to those necessary to preserve essential communications, or to improve the worst danger spots, or to meet indispensable requirements of other parts of the investment programme.
