HC Deb 02 November 1949 vol 469 c46W
13 and 20. Sir P. Hannon

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies (1) if he will inform the House of the circumstances under which a United Nations Trustees Mission was sent to inspect Tanganyika;

(2) if the United Nations has yet appointed a mission to visit Togoland in the Cameroons; what was the attitude of His Majesty's Government to the proposal; and if, in view of ultimate disturbance and unfavourable reaction resulting from missions of this character comprising representatives of foreign countries who have no knowledge of British colonial administration, he will take steps to protest against any further such appointments.

Mr. Creech Jones

The Trusteeship Council Visiting Mission to Tanganyika last year and the Visiting Mission to Togoland and the Cameroons which is now in West Africa, were appointed in accordance with the provisions of Article 87 of the United Nations Charter, which authorises the Trusteeship Council to arrange periodic visits to Trust Territories at times agreed upon with the administering authorities.
