HC Deb 02 November 1949 vol 469 cc45-6W
9. Mr. Teeling

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how far recent scales of pay for Foreign Office employees serving abroad, designed to take effect when foreign countries devalued, have been brought into effect for all our staffs abroad since our own devaluation in the same way; and in what countries has a different scale been operated, or no change made.

Mr. Mayhew

Adjustments are made in the allowances of Foreign Service employees overseas to meet substantial changes in rates of exchange. The system which operates to meet a depreciation in the value of a foreign currency also applies in the case of revaluation of sterling. The allowances of Foreign Service staffs abroad have accordingly been revised on this basis.
