asked His Majesty's Government what is the objective in numbers for which officers and men are being recruited for the Royal Air Force; how many officers and men, (a) Regulars, and (b) National Service, are expected to leave the Service in 1947–48 and 1948–49; how many officers and men, (a) Regulars, (b) National Service, were recruited in 1947–48, and what is the present monthly rate of recruitment.

Recruiting to the Royal Air Force is proceeding with the objective of 213,000 men and women by 31st March, 1950. In 1947–48, 9,943 officers and 138,501 airmen and airwomen left the Service, of whom 4 per cent. were Regulars; 3,025 officers and 94,300 airmen and airwomen are expected to leave in 1948–49, 9 per cent. being Regulars. During 1947–48, 46,289 National Service airmen and 37,011 Regular airmen and airwomen were recruited. The average monthly intakes for the three months ended January 31, 1949, were 3,946 and 1,967 respectively. During 1947–48, 8,222 commissions were granted to men and women, inclusive of commissions granted to those already serving on another form of commission or engagement.
