asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give early consideration to the remuneration of the higher grades of the Civil Service.

Yes. I have appointed a Committee to advise the Government on this matter, with the following terms of referenceTo advise Ministers as to the general level of remuneration of the higher posts of the Civil Service—administrative, professional, scientific and technical—and on any particular principles involved. The membership of the- Committee is as follows:

  • The Lord Chorley.
  • Sir Frederick Bain, M.C.
  • George Gibson, Esq., C.H., LL.D.
  • Sir Hector Hetherington.
  • The Lord Layton, C.H., C.B.E.
