HC Deb 02 December 1948 vol 458 cc219-20W
Mr. Gammans

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what reply he has sent or proposes to send to the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, British Guiana, who have protested against the imposition of the Control of Prices Order on the grounds that the new prices were fixed by a secret committee without full consultation with the trades concerned; and if he is aware that any changes in prices cannot possibly be made by 1st December without severe dislocation of trade.

Mr. Creech Jones

I have asked the Governor to inform the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce that I see no reason to intervene in this matter. The President of the Chamber was himself a member of the Committee on whose recommendations the Control of Prices Order was based. One month's notice of the price changes was given, and I am assured that this is quite sufficient for the remarking of goods.
