HC Deb 25 November 1947 vol 444 cc266-7W
Mr. H. White

asked the Minister of National Insurance if he will give particulars of the number of cases of miners certified as disabled by nystagmus, dermatitis and pneumoconiosis in the East Midland region in 1936 and 1946, respectively.

Mr. J. Griffiths

The number of certificates of disablement given by examining surgeons under the Workmen's Compensation Act in this region for miners' nystagmus was 176 in 1936 and 173 in 1946. The corresponding figures for the scheduled disease dermatitis produced by dust or liquids are 30 and 263 respectively. The number of cases of pneumoconiosis certified by the Silicosis Medical Board in this region in 1946 was 14. The compensation scheme for the disease did not come into force until 1st July, 1943, but one case of silicosis was certified in 1936.
