HC Deb 20 November 1947 vol 444 c205W
77. Mr. Gammans

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will instruct the police forces in the country to exercise discretion in checking motor vehicles for faulty tyres in view of the fact that many sizes of tyres are unobtainable and that there has been no improvement in the position during the past six months.

Mr. Younger

My right hon. Friend's information is that normally the police proceed in this matter by way of caution or advice to motorists and prosecutions are undertaken only in cases where tyres are so worn as to be a source of danger. The police are fully aware of the difficulty of replacement, and my right hon. Friend does not think they are in need of any advice on this matter from him.
