§ 75 and 76. Mr. Griersonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will make a statement on the strike affecting workers in the Carlisle and District State Management Breweries;
(2) when he will be in a position to announce new wages agreements for all employees in the State Management Scheme.
§ Mr. YoungerThe brewery workers at Carlisle are paid wages at rates agreed with their union, the National Union of General and Municipal Workers. Claims for an increase in their wages have been put forward by the workers and negotiations on these claims have been in progress between the union and the State Management District Office and a certain measure of provisional agreement had been reached when the workers decided to come out on strike against the advice of the Union. The strike is accordingly an unofficial one and will cause great inconvenience to the residents in the Carlisle district so long as it lasts. My right hon. Friend is however arranging to discuss the position at an early date with the representatives of the union concerned.
