HC Deb 12 November 1947 vol 444 cc75-6W
56. Mrs. Mann

asked the Minister of Defence what steps have been taken to cut down unnecessary consumption of fuel and light in the Services; and what savings have been effected as a result.

Mr. Alexander

The Services have introduced a number of measures during the last two years to reduce the consumption of fuel and light. These have undoubtedly resulted in substantial savings, but it would involve much time and labour to make an accurate assessment. Instructions were given recently for a further reduction of 20 per cent. in the allocation of coal in the six winter months. The need for the most stringent economy is constantly stressed by means of instructions and posters.
