HC Deb 10 November 1947 vol 444 c2W
4. Mr. Gammans

asked the Minister of Food what is the reason for refusing the extra cheese ration to a working farmer and any of his sons and daughters working on the farm when it is given to his agricultural workers.

Mr. Strachey

The reason why the special cheese ration is not allowed to working farmers, or to relatives who may be working for them, is that they are usually able to return home for a midday meal if they so wish. Moreover, the working farmer's household is, quite legitimately and inevitably far better placed than other households for obtaining additional foodstuffs under the various self-suppliers' scheme.
