asked the Minister of Education whether he is now prepared to recognise service in the Merchant Navy for incremental purposes for teachers.

Mr. Tomlinson

Teachers who served in the Merchant Navy during the war beginning in 1939 receive salary increments for the time involved as this service counts as war service. Local education authorities may also at their discretion allow increments for previous service, other than war service, in the Merchant Navy; for example, if they consider that the service is likely to be of value to the teacher in carrying out his duties.
