HC Deb 02 April 1947 vol 435 c326W
96. Mr. Younger

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a statement on recent changes made in the Constitution of Fiji.

Mr. Creech Jones

Yes, Sir. The power of the Governor to disallow any vote or resolution of the Legislative Council has been removed; the franchise has been extended to civil servants; the qualifications required for the registration of Indian voters have been brought into line with those required for European voters, and opportunity has been taken to make special provision for the registration for purposes of voting of the illegitimate person.
