HC Deb 30 October 1946 vol 428 cc118-9W
Lieut.-Colonel Sharp

asked the Minister of Agriculture what progress is being made with the revision of the Ordnance Survey maps; what scales and styles of maps of the West Riding of Yorkshire will be made available; and when, approximately, they will be issued.

Mr. T. Williams

The issue of partially revised and provisional new editions of the Ordnance Survey standard series is proceeding as quickly as possible, but the production of the complete new Ordnance Survey series based on the re-survey of Great Britain is a long-term operation covering a number of years. For the scales and styles of maps to be issued I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply given by my predecessor to the hon. and gallant Member for East Grinstead (Colonel Clarke) on 25th April, 1945. In addition, however, the Ordnance Survey is now producing maps at a scale of 1/25000 and Air Photo Mosaics at 1/1250 and smaller scales.

The present position in respect of the West Riding of Yorkshire is as follows:

(a) The 25 inch plans required in connection with the Town and Country Planning Act, 1933, have been revised, the last sheets being nearly ready for publication.

(b) Sheets of the provisional 6 inch map are being issued at intervals.

(c) 21 sheets of the 1/25000 series have been printed to date and the remainder should appear in 1947.

(d) The Military edition of the 1 inch map is already on sale but it is hoped to replace it by the new Popular Edition during the coming year.

(e) New editions of maps at ¼ inch and smaller scales have already been published.
