HC Deb 24 October 1946 vol 428 cc17-8W
Sir H. Morris-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is now the position as regards the completion of the work of the Welsh Church Commission.

Mr. Ede

The balance of the redemption stock due to Commissioners under the Tithe Act, 1936, has now been issued, and as a result the Commissioners will be able to make a distribution to the county councils and the University of about £1,090,000 and thereby practically to complete that part of their work which concerns these beneficiaries.

There remain, however, many miscellaneous items of property which are transferable or probably transferable to the Representative Body. As regards many of these items detailed inquiries are necessary before transfer can be completed, and I have been forced to the conclusion that to enable this work to be done a further extension of the life of the Commission for one more year is unavoidable. This extension will not have any appreciable effect so far as concerns the county councils and the University: they will have received before the end of the present year all that is due to them except such fractional sums as may remain when the accounts of the Commission are finally closed.
