HC Deb 06 November 1946 vol 428 c268W
34. Major Beamish

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why instructions were issued that officers employed in the Palestine Police, whose appointment terminated for any reason whatsoever prior to 9th May. 1946, are not eligible for the payment of war bonus in a lump sum, and what significance attaches to the date selected.

Mr. Creech Jones

In May last when the compensatory allowances applicable to Palestine Government officers were revised, the Government of Palestine authorised the payment of a lump sum to serving officers, including the Palestine Police, in respect of the two years 1st April, 1944 to 31st March, 1946, in recognition of the fact that the rates approved in May, 1945, had been found to be inadequate in certain respects. Officers whose services were terminated before 1st April, 1946, on grounds of age, ill-health or abolition of office, are eligible for apro rata payment in respect of any completed month of service between 1st April, 1944 and 31st March, 1946.
